CNA License Requirements

So you want to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. It's a good choice, and will really help to give you an edge in today's competitive job market.

But what exactly are the requirements for getting a CNA License? Can anyone get one? How old do you need to be? Are there any restrictions?

Don't worry, it isn't all that difficult to get a CNA License however, besides taking the course and passing the two exams, you do need to meet these following criteria in order to have one:

Age:

While there is no age requirement to take the CNA Course, you need to be at least 18 years of age in order to be eligible for your CNA License.

Competency:

Besides passing the course and two final exams, you will also be required to undergo “clinical training”. This is to ensure that you have actually completed the course, and actually know what you are doing. This training consists of 40 hours of clinical training which could be on site job experience, or in classroom, which has been certified by a trained nurse.

High School Diploma:

You will need to prove that you have attained a high school diploma, or in some cases a G.E.D. This is because you will need the basic courses in biology in order to understand the human body. If you do not have a high school diploma, or a G.E.D., an exception may be made if you can prove that you have the equivalent knowledge. Making exceptions is not done on a regular basis, so it is best if you have your high school diploma, or G.E.D. handy when applying for your CNA License.

Transcripts:

You will be required to submit your transcripts from the CNA course you have successfully completed, for review of the licensing staff. Now a lower grade does not necessarily mean you will be rejected, but it is always best if you can show at least an 80% average or better.

Background Check:

Because you will have access to a lot of different things, such as controlled substances, in your new place of work, it is standard procedure to run a criminal background check on you before issuing your CNA License. You will be given a card which you will need to take to your local police station to submit your fingerprints to the licensing staff. The prints will be checked for any criminal, or drug abuse records. If you do not have a clean record, you will not be able to attain a CNA license.

No Record of Wrongdoing:

You must not have any recorded incidents of abuse or neglect on the local or state CNA registry or any other CNA registry. If you have been found guilty of abuse or neglect in a previous work environment you will be ineligible for a CNA License.

Proficiency in English:

In order to be eligible for a CNA license you MUST be proficient in the English language. This is because the majority of patients will be communicating in English. So in order to qualify you need to read and speak English at a reasonable level.

So, as you can see, getting a CNA License isn't too hard, and with a bit of work, you too can achieve your dream of becoming a registered Certified Nursing Assistant.
